Marketing and Promotion Campaign for Malaysian Timber Products in the Local Market

MTIB through the Trade Development Division (BPP) has taken the initiative to implement a Marketing and Promotion Campaign for Malaysian Timber Products in the Local Market to raise awareness among the public and related agencies such as the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), Public Works Department (JKR), The Institution of Engineers (IEM), Malaysian Architects Association (PAM) about the uniqueness and advantages of local timber products for use in various sectors, especially in the construction sector.

The implementation of this campaign is in line with the National Agri-Commodity Policy (DAKN) and the National Timber Industry Strategic Plan (NTISP) which targets increasing the use and demand for wood and wood products in the local market to RM20 billion by 2025. Referring to the Construction Economic Census (2011 and 2016), only 7.61% of the total value of construction materials of RM97.13 billion consists of wood materials. The Study on the Use of Wood in Construction conducted by MTIB in 2018 showed that lack of awareness of wood materials is among the factors influencing the use of wood in the construction industry in Malaysia.

The Marketing and Promotion Campaign for Malaysian Timber Products in the Local Market targets the following objectives:

  • Increase public awareness/specifiers;
  • Increase the achievement and development of entrepreneurs;
  • Strengthen capacity development and trade;
  • Promote the development of innovation and creativity;
  • Increase the use of local wood and wood products;
  • Increase awareness of Green, Legality & Sustainability in the timber industry; and vii. Achieve a target local market value of RM20 Billion by 2025 in line with the 'Buy Malaysian Goods' recommendation.
